In 1976 Steve Forbert arrived in New York City from his Meridian, Mississippi hometown - where he slotted, seamlessly into the “new folk” revival at such legendary Manhattan clubs as Folk City, The Bitter End and Kenny’s Castaways. He also took the stage at CBGB (ground zero of the burgeoning new wave/punk movement) and busked on the streets of Greenwich Village and in the elegant confines of Grand Central Station.
Steve Forbert wasted little time in winning a major label deal with Nemperor / CBS Records and released his much heralded debut, Alive on Arrival in 1978. The following year he released Jackrabbit Slim which brought wider renown with its #11 pop chart hit, Romeo’s Tune. This provided Steve the stature for his troubadour existence, keeping him active ever since as “a striking performer, very much worth seeing and hearing,” according to the New York Times.
296 Broadview Avenue is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that, and we need your support to do so - please consider making a donation towards our goals of making Hugh’s Room the best listening room in Toronto! link to our donation page
