I'm a bit of a curious fellow, forgive me. Here goes:

This weekend DM took both nights off, but I stuck around and listened both nights, since I was planning to do so anyway.

And both those four hour slots from 8-12 blew me away. I mean they were just excellent. Fabulous music, and presented in the patented Marsden tapestry.

This left me wondering whether DM prepares "contingency" 4-hour shows for nights when he can't do the live gig. These nights seemed to have been programmed by David even though he wasn't live.

Which leads to my next question: it's very easy to track how many people are listening, since each is identified by a uniqe IP. I am wondering if there is a severe dropoff in listenership on nights when DM is not there (unexpectedly), or if most people stick around anyway.

Just my thoughts on Sunday night after 4 hours of outstanding music.

I wish David was doing the show live, but that was pretty goddam good for a robot!

The "curated stream" is pretty damn fine listening.

I have to confess, on the rare nights David is away from his regular show, I often stray into exploring my own music collection, and re-discover stuff I forgot I had .

Several thousand albums in digital format is a daunting thing to wade into. Flipping through LPs in milk crates is much more user-friendly in a weird tactile sort of way. I have to make a space to set up my turntables again

The "curated stream" is pretty damn fine listening.

Sometimes are better than other times. Sometimes it sounds a bit like "Retro Night on Mix99".

I mean, I don't care if I never hear "Situation" or "Hungry Like The Wolf" ever again. These tunes are burned out completely. They are burned into my brain to the degree that I can hear every note from my own imagination. Who needs a radio, all I need to do is think about "Situation" and I can hear it.

Remember the summer when "Breakfast In America" was charting? Man, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing that record. Punch the buttons on the car radio, and a song from BIA was on all five of them! Guy drives by in a convertible, yup, he's listening to BIA. It's coming from the stores, it's coming from the houses, there's no escape, IT'S EVERYWHERE!

That was what, 40 years ago? And I still don't need to play that record, because I heard it so many times I can play it in my head from memory.

Same goes for the Bee Gees' SNF soundtrack, you just couldn't get away from it.

Anyway, the point of this rambling is that sometimes the stream runs a bunch of these "hits" together. I've mentioned a couple of songs, but there are lots of others. To me, playing "Hungry Like The Wolf" is like playing "Stairway To Heaven". It just isn't done in polite society.

Ok, tongue was just a little bit in cheek there, but this is the reason for my inquiry:

I've noticed that the "curated stream" is pretty good on nights when David is off. Almost like the curator knew when it would be broadcast. Almost like those hours were programmed with an eye to holding the Sat/Sun audience.

Then again, I could be on drugs.
