Fifty years ago, on Nov. 22, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. The Kennedy Suite is Cowboy Junkies' intense exploration of the tragedy, and it's streaming on CBC Music until Nov. 5.

It's more than an album, though; it's a rock opera, song cycle and post-modern musical, as well as a live stage production that runs Nov. 22 and 23, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the assassination, at Toronto's Winter Garden Theatre, presented by Massey Hall. Tickets are available here.

The Kennedy Suite tells the story of the assassination through the perspectives of several characters, each of whom is profoundly affected by the event. The album is a collaboration between Toronto composer and lyricist Scott Garbe, Cowboy Junkies and Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson of the Skydiggers, and it features a long list of major talents in Canadian music. Hawksley Workman, Sarah Harmer, Jason Collett, Harlan Pepper and Lee Harvey Osmond are among the performers.
