Many of Canada's folk musicians will be descending on Edmonton this weekend for the 11th annual Folk Music Awards that includes workshops, showcases and a gala Sunday night at the Citadel Theatre hosted by multiple Juno award winning singer-songwriter Connie Kaldor and folk singer and dancer Benoit Bourque who has long been affiliated with French North American roots group La Bottine Souriante.

Among the performers Sunday, Nov. 8th are Pharis and Jason Romero, a husband and wife duo who have earned wide recognition for their J. Romero Banjo Co. handcrafted string instruments and an adherence to traditionalist music in the vein of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. The couple is the front-runner Sunday night with four nominations, followed by Whitehorse, Jenn Grant, Amelia Curran, Fortunate Ones and Catherine MacLellan with three apiece.

This year the CFMA organizers received over 600 entries, more than double those vying for award nominations when the first annual was held in 2005.
