The 20th Maple Blues Awards Gala

The most important date on the calendar of the Canadian blues scene is fast approaching.

On Monday Jan. 23rd, Koerner Hall in Toronto will host the 20th edition of the Maple Blues Awards, an event that has grown from humble beginnings to become a very professionally-run occasion that has done a great deal to unite and promote the Canadian blues community.

Derek Andrews reports that, “Maple Blues Award tickets are moving well. We have a few seats left but hopefully we will get close to sell out, as we have in the past.”

Prior to the awards show on Monday, blues movers and shakers and artists from across the country will convene in Toronto for the 8th annual Blues Summit, which runs from Jan. 20-23. Held every second year, it presents panels, keynotes, business meeting opportunities and artist showcases, and Andrews is excited about the event.

“Blues Summit Eight is in a new hotel, the Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre, where Canadian Music Week was hosted a few years ago. The hotel is pumped about us bringing the national blues community to the city centre. It is a beautiful space.

“We are running a twin-stage showcase in the Grand Ballroom, where we will also produce our keynote brunch featuring the Blues Foundation's executive director Barbara Newman out of Memphis. She will be giving a "state of the blues" address.

“Let's see how things go this year. Maybe there is a need to keep growing the Canadian blues scene. The artists certainly need the gigs and every time we turn around there is a new festival. One thing is for sure: we will be back at Koerner Hall next year with the Maple Blues Awards.”
